The Core Loop: How to Design Mobile Gameplay Players Can't Put Down
Every great mobile game is a loop inside a loop inside a loop. Here is how to design each one, and how they should connect.
EddieFounder · Game Director ·
- The core loop is the 10–60 second action players repeat most.
- Session and meta loops give the core loop meaning over days and weeks.
- Prototype the core loop first, with grey boxes, before any meta.
- Every loop should end by opening the next one.
Ask players why they love a game and they'll talk about the characters, the art or a moment they remember. Watch them play and you'll see something else: the same short sequence of actions, repeated hundreds of times. That sequence is the core loop, and if it isn't fun, nothing built on top of it will save the game.
Three loops, three timescales
| LOOP | TIMESCALE | QUESTION IT ANSWERS |
|---|---|---|
| Core loop | 10–60 seconds | Is this fun to do? |
| Session loop | 3–10 minutes | Why play one more round? |
| Meta loop | Days to months | Why come back tomorrow? |
Anatomy of a core loop
A strong core loop has four beats. Here is how it works in a runner like the ones we build:
- 01ActRun, dodge and jump through a short level.
- 02RewardCollect shards and a score that reflect how well you played.
- 03InvestSpend shards on upgrades that change how you play.
- 04ReturnRun again, further and faster, with your new power.
How to design one
- Start with a verb. Run, merge, match, aim. The verb should be fun in a grey box.
- Add a reward that reflects skill, not just time spent.
- Give the reward a use that changes the next attempt.
- Cut every step between “I failed” and “I am playing again”.
- Only then layer the session and meta loops on top.
If the grey box isn’t fun, the final art won’t be either. Polish amplifies; it never creates.
Common mistakes
- Building the meta first, then hunting for a core loop to justify it.
- Rewards that feel random rather than earned.
- Loops that end without pointing to the next action.
- Too many currencies competing for the same loop.
